Terms of service

The rules for using Tarsier, including accounts, handles and the leaderboard.

Effective date: July 28, 2026 · Covers Tarsier 1.4 and later

These Terms of Service ("Terms") govern your use of Tarsier ("we", "our", or "the app"), a Tagalog language learning app for iOS. By downloading, accessing, or using the app, you agree to these Terms. If you do not agree, please do not use the app.

1. Acceptance of Terms

By using Tarsier you confirm that you accept these Terms and that you agree to comply with them. These Terms apply alongside our Privacy Policy, which explains how we handle your data. If you do not agree to either document, you must stop using the app.

2. Subscriptions and Billing

Tarsier is free to download and includes free lessons. Some features are available through an auto-renewing subscription (Super Tarsier).

  • Payment is charged to your Apple ID account at confirmation of purchase.
  • Subscriptions renew automatically unless auto-renew is turned off at least 24 hours before the end of the current period.
  • Your account is charged for renewal within 24 hours before the end of the current period.
  • You can manage or cancel your subscription in your device Settings under your Apple ID, or in the App Store. Deleting the app does not cancel a subscription.
  • Any free trial automatically converts to a paid subscription unless cancelled before the trial ends. Unused trial time is forfeited when you purchase a subscription.
  • Refunds are handled by Apple under the App Store terms. We do not process payments directly and cannot issue refunds ourselves. Refund requests go through Apple Support.

3. Acceptable Use

You agree that you will not:

  • Copy, scrape, extract, or republish the lesson content, audio, images, or any part of the curriculum.
  • Reverse engineer, decompile, or attempt to extract the source code or assets of the app.
  • Resell, sublicense, rent, or redistribute the app or its content.
  • Use the app for any unlawful purpose or in any way that could damage or interfere with the service.
  • Choose a handle or display name that is obscene, hateful, harassing, sexually explicit, violent, discriminatory, or that impersonates another person, a public figure, or Tarsier itself.
  • Attempt to evade the handle and display-name filters, or to reclaim a name after we have removed it.
  • Manipulate your XP or leaderboard position by any means other than genuinely using the app, including automation, tampering with the app, or interfering with our servers.
  • Create accounts in bulk, or create a new account to get around a suspension.

The app is licensed to you for personal, non-commercial use on devices you own or control.

4. Accounts, Handles and the Leaderboard

An account is optional. Tarsier is fully usable without one, and we will not require you to create one to keep learning. Creating an account lets you claim an @handle, appear on the leaderboard, and carry a Super subscription across your devices.

Your account. You are responsible for keeping access to the Apple Account or email address you sign in with, and for activity that happens under your account. You must be old enough to agree to these Terms in the country you live in. Sign in with Apple and the one-time email link are the only sign-in methods; there is no password for us to reset.

Handles and display names. Every install is given a handle automatically. Signing in lets you change it, and changes are limited to once every seven days. A handle is not property, we do not sell handles, and we may reclaim or change any handle that breaks these Terms, impersonates someone, or is squatted on without use. Handles and display names are checked against a filter when first claimed and on every rename, and passing that filter is not our approval of the name.

What other people can see. If you sign in, your handle, display name, title, avatar, profile colour and XP are visible to other signed-in learners on the leaderboard. That is the only place your information is shown to others. Tarsier has no chat, messaging, comments, posts, photo upload or free-text profile field, so there is nothing else you can publish and no way for users to contact one another through the app.

No tolerance for objectionable content or abusive behaviour. We do not tolerate objectionable content or abusive users. Any leaderboard row can be reported by long-pressing it and choosing "Report User", or by emailing support@tarsierlearn.com. We review reports and act on them as quickly as we can. Where a name or a user breaks these Terms we will remove the name, remove the leaderboard entry, or suspend or delete the account, without notice and at our discretion. Because the app has no way for users to send anything to each other, removal from the leaderboard ends any contact between you and another user.

Deleting your account. You can delete your account at any time from Settings, Account, Delete Account. This removes your account, handle and leaderboard entry from our servers and erases your progress on the device. It does not cancel a subscription; see section 2.

5. Educational Disclaimer

Tarsier is a self-study tool for learning Tagalog. It is provided for educational purposes only and is not a certified credential, qualification, or substitute for formal instruction. While we work to keep the content accurate, we make no warranty regarding linguistic correctness, cultural framing, or translation precision. Language has regional and contextual variation, and the app reflects one approach to teaching it. You use the learning content at your own discretion.

6. Intellectual Property

All content in the app, including lessons, text, audio, the Tarsier mascot, artwork, and the Tarsier name and brand, is owned by the developer and protected by intellectual property laws. Using the app does not transfer any ownership to you. You receive a limited, personal, non-transferable license to use the content for your own learning while these Terms are in effect.

7. Your Data

Your learning progress, vocabulary and preferences are stored on your device using Apple's SwiftData framework, and back up automatically to your own iCloud. If you sign in, your account details, handle and XP are also stored on our servers. Subscription records are processed through Apple and RevenueCat. You can erase local data with "Reset All Data" in Settings, or remove everything including the server-side record with Delete Account. For the full picture of what is collected and where it goes, see our Privacy Policy.

8. Termination

You may stop using the app at any time, and delete your account from Settings, Account, Delete Account. We may suspend or end your access to the app, to your handle, or to the leaderboard if you violate these Terms, including the acceptable-use rules in section 3 and the conduct rules in section 4. For clear or repeated abuse we may do so immediately and without notice. The sections on intellectual property, disclaimers, and limitation of liability survive termination.

9. Limitation of Liability

The app is provided "as is" and "as available" without warranties of any kind, to the fullest extent permitted by law. To the maximum extent permitted by applicable law, our total liability to you for any claim arising from your use of the app is limited to the amount you paid for the app in the twelve months before the claim arose. We are not liable for indirect, incidental, or consequential damages.

10. Governing Law

These Terms are governed by the laws of the Province of British Columbia and the federal laws of Canada that apply there, without regard to conflict-of-law rules. Any dispute will be subject to the courts located in British Columbia, Canada.

11. Changes to These Terms

We may update these Terms from time to time. Changes will be posted on this page with an updated effective date. Continued use of the app after changes constitutes acceptance of the updated Terms.
